"James N. Lawrence was born in Bordentown, Njer., and was eighty years of
age when he died. His was a checkered life and full of vicissitudes. Educated
in the law, he was admitted to practice but forsook the courts to follow the
sea. Later on, he engaged in the Mercantile business and afterwards he practiced
surveying. During the was he was in the Secret Service of the United States.
By a fortunate oil discovery in Pennsylvania, he made a fortune but lost it all
by being on a the bond of a defaulting State Treasurer in New Jersey. He had
four sons in the late war, all whom had creditable records."
"His grandfather was the last judge under the crown, and the first under
the confederation of New Jersey. His father was on the bench for forty years,
and left behind him an enviable reputation. Mr. Lawrence was one of the CLAY
electors in New Jersey when Clay ran for the presidency and stumped the state
in his behalf. He was a cousin of the ex-Governor of New Jersey, and of ex-Comptroller
William Lawrence of Ohio. His mother was a daughter of Captain Newell of Revolutionary
war fame."

"Was a sea captain early in life and visited may foreign parts (sic: ports),
having made four voyages to the East Indies via Cape Good Hope. Later he became
a civil engineer."
"Was first cousin to Capt. James Lawrence, the American Naval hero, who
in 1813 commanded the 'Chesapeake' in the engagement with the British frigate
'Shannon' off Boston in the was of 1812, and was killed in action; his last words
