John Sheldon Gray Sr.305,356 was born on 23 February 1742/3 in Sheepscot, Maine.305,306,312 He lived in Clinton, Maine (Kennebec) between August 1769 and September 1772.305 In April 1797 he was a selectman in Clinton, Maine (Kennebec).357 John owned before 1802 in Clinton, Maine (Kennebec).305 He died in 1842 at the age of 99 in Harmony, Maine (Somerset).356 He was buried in Gray Family Cemetery, Harmony, Maine. From "History of Clinton Maine" : Capt. John Gray born (1742) in Sheepscot [Maine], came to town prior to September 1772. In March 1784 he sold two hundred acres of land located at "Read's Camp on Sebasticook River about 16 miles above Fort Halifax." Benjamin Runnels of Winslow bought the lot, located on the east side of the river, north and adjoining land owned by Abraham Roundy. In 1792 John sold to his son, John Jr., two hundred acres on the north side of the Sebasticook, just south of land John Misack had lived on. Captain Gray married Elizabeth, the daughter of John and Desire Roundy, at Marblehead, Massachusetts, on 11 August 1769. John was a yeoman and mariner; thus his title of captain may have meant sea captain. He was elected to several town offices from 1795 through 1801. The family sold its last land holdings here in 1802 and had left town by 1810.
John Gray was elected First Selectman in Clinton in April, 1797 & held other town offices 1795-1801. The date of his departure from Clinton to Harmony is not known with certainty. He is alleged to have been a Revolutionary War veteran, but no proof of this has been established. There is no record of a pension in White's "Abstracts of Rev. War Pension Files," pg. 1413. John Gray and his wife are believed to be buried in the Gray Family cemetery in Harmony, ME where there are 2 unmarked stones with rounded tops, standing upright. There is a John Gray buried at East Vassalboro Cemetery who died 22 Feb. 1840 at 100 years, 6 months - I've not yet identified who this John was, although his age would have made him a contemporary of our John."
