Hayward, James was born in 1817 rather than 1815 (Wesley Vital Records). This is confirmed by his tombstone at the cemetery in Wesley, Maine. He gave his age at the 1850 census as 33, giving a birth year of about 1817. IGI shows birth 24 Sept. 1815 at Shepody, Albert Co., NB. 1815 seems to be confirmed by the 1840 census as well, when 2 males 15 under 20 were listed. James appears as head of household in the US census for the first time in 1840 in Wesley, Washington Co., ME. The family consisted of 1 male, 20 under 30, 1 female under 5 and 1 female 20 under 30. This is consistent with what we know of his family. He appears again in 1850 in Wesley, now a 33 yr. old farmer born in Maine. Five daughters were alive at this time; daughter Vianna born 1837 per cemetery records, died in 1839; by 1850 another daughter Vianna appears in the census, born about 1845.
