Thirteenth Generation

7484. Thomas Rogers of the Mayflower was born in 1581 in England. Mayflower Traveler He died about 1621/2 at the age of 41 in Plymouth, Massachusetts (Plymouth). Thomas Rogers, the Mayflower Passenger, who died in the first sickness, made his journey to the new world with his son Joseph, who survived. His wife did not come to America.

Gov. Bradford says "The rest of Thomas Rogers came over, & are married, & have many children." According to Bowman, and substantiated by later research, only one of the children who came later has been identified, viz.: John (2) Rogers, who married Ann Churchman.

Of Thomas little is known. In 1619 he sued a baker and a miller of Leyden to free a lien on his house, and perhaps in preparation for his journey, won the suit and was awarded court costs. (NEHGR 143:207). He had bought this house in 1616/7 and sold it April, 1620 (Ibid.)

Records in Leyden of the 1622 poll tax show his family living there in the back part of a house owned by separatist Anthony Clements, and including John, son of Thomas; Elizabeth Rogers, widow of Thomas; and Elizabeth and Margaret, her children.

Upon Thomas' death, Joseph may have lived with Governor Bradford. Many have claimed for Thomas other male descendants, none of which had been proved by the publication date of Mayflower Family Volume Two, Thomas Rogers, and it is there noted one has been disproved, i.e., William Rogers of Connecticut and Long Island.

7485. Elizabeth Elsgen was born in 1581 in England. She died in Netherlands.

Thomas Rogers was born between 1600 and 1608. per History of MF Planters by L.C. Hills

not mentioned in MAYFLOWER INCREASINGS by Susan Roser

"Thomas Rogers died the first winter in the "general sickness" but his son, Joseph, survived. He was called a "camlet merchant" in the Leyden records and appears to have come to Leyden a few years before the migration as it was not until 1618 that he acquired citizenship. He sold his house in Leyden in April, 1620, preparatory to removal to America." [per "The English Ancestry and Homes of the Pilgrim Fathers" by Charles Edward Banks]

The only other information that we positively know about Thomas Rogers is that Gov. William Bradford, in 1650, wrote that "Thomas Rogers and Joseph his son" came on the MAYFLOWER, and that "Thomas died in the first sickness, but his son Joseph is still living and is married and hath six children. The rest of Thomas Roger's (children) came over and are married and have many children."
