Twelfth Generation

3690. Henry Tibbetts was born in 1596 in England.442 He died in 1676 at the age of 80 in Dover Neck, New Hampshire (Strafford).442 1596-1676 - "THE FOUNDER OF THE TIBBETTS FAMILY IN AMERICA"

The tradition has been handed down in some branches of the family that this first Henry Tibbetts came from Manchester, England. In another branch the tradition is that he came from Wales. this does not mean that he came from modern Wales but merely that he was Welch, that is to say, of ancient British stock, not Anglo-Saxon. Devon and Cornwall were in ancient days called West Wales. I have found reference to a Mary Isabella Tibbits, daughter and heiress of Richard John Tibbits. She was married to Samuel Hood, 3rd Viscount Hood, an English Naval celebrity. This could be the royal line that we have heard reference to but I have yet to make the connection.
Henry Tibbetts was born in England in 1596. On July 13, 1635, at the age of 39, Henry sailed from Bristol, England to Boston, Mass. aboard the "James". He was accompanied by his wife, ELIZABETH, age 39, and two children; JERIMIAH (Jeremy) age 4, and SAMUEL age 2. Henry's sister REMEMBRANCE age 28 also sailed with them.
The "JAMES", a relatively small ship, carried one hundred passengers along with horses, cattle, goats and a large supply of provisions, enough to last the journey that took over 12 weeks.

It is unknown where the family first settled but in 1643 Henry and his family settled at "Dover Neck" (now Dover) in New Hampshire.

Henry was a farmer and shoemaker and engaged in lumbering. He held various minor offices in the town. He was admitted freeman at Dover in 1653. He was constable in 1653 and in 1663; was "Viewer of Fences"; took the oath of office as "Sealer of Leather" for the town in 1661; testified in the suit of John Ault against Capt. Thomas Wiggin in 1645; had a lawsuit in 1647. Henry had several land grants from the town. One of the grants was given in 1656 for one hundred acres of land adjoining the Newichawanock River (now Salmon Falls River) in what is now Rollingsford, lying between St. Albans Cove and Quamphegam. This one hundred acre tract was in the family in succeeding generations. It was conveyed by deed in 1659 to his son Jeremy and son-in-law THOMAS NOCK. In the year 1648, in the earliest tax rate of Dover now on record, Henry Tibbetts "Rated 0087:00:00 and to pay 4d.pL is 0001:09:00".

Henry died at Dover Neck in 1676 at the age of 80, having survived his wife elizabeth by several years. The statement has sometimes appeared in print that he had a second wife, MARY, but this is an error.

3691. Elizabeth Tibbetts was born in 1596.442 The age of Elizabeth and Henry are based upon their stated age of 39
when they arrived in the ship the James in 1635.
