However, at the 1850 census, "Freeman Hayward" is shown as the 15 year old son of Henry & Asuba. It appears that he went by the name Freeman all of his life. He was the eldest son, per Henry's obituary, also consistent with the 1850 census. Freeman Hayward appears in the 1860 census living in St. Cloud, Stearns Co, MN, living 2 houses away from his uncle & aunt, John, Jr. and Melinda. I have not located him in the 1870 or later MN censuses. His marriage in ME in 1861 suggests that he returned East. The obituary of his father indicates that he had died before his father, possibly in New Orleans, LA. However, an inquiry in "Downeast Ancestors," Vol 3, No. 4, pg. 32 indicates he died in 1910, possibly in Milltown, Washington Co., Maine. The same inquiry indicates marriages to 1) Mary Ann Ayers (no date) - rather than Mary E. Brisley - and 2) Marion Leeman, 4 Jan. 1899. Marie Harrington confirmed the second marriage at the Augusta, ME state archives in August, 1997 (ref #12, roll #19): md. in Calais, ME 4 Jan 1899, he age 68, bride age 51. This souce also indicates that he resided in South Dakota, but it's not clear if he was resident there at the time of his 1899 marriage. According to the obituary of "Freeman H. Hayward" from an unamed newspaper of 2 Aug. 1911 (probably Milltown or Cooper, ME), Freeman was a resident of Milltown for 12 years prior to his death. He was survivied by a widow and four children from a prior marriage. He was buried in Cooper. Freeman "John" Hayward and Mary A. Brisley were married on 18 August 1861 in Cooper, Maine (Washington). Could Mary have been the daughter of Benjamin Brisley of St. Stephens, NB at his marriage in 1831 to Mary Seeley of Eastport, ME at Washington Co., ME, per Alice MacDonald Long, editor, Marriage Returns of Washington Co., Maine prior to 1892, (Picton Press, Camden ME, 1993), pg. 4? Freeman "John" Hayward-31329 and Mary A. Brisley-31459 had the following children: Freeman "John" Hayward and Marion Leeman were married on 4 January 1899 in Calais, Maine (Washington). Marion Leeman was born about 1847 in Eastport, Maine (Washington). She died after 19 July 1911 at the age of 64. Surnamed spelled "Leeman" in ME marriage records; variant is "Leaman."
